Mji Mpya, Tanzania – In a powerful display of community-led resilience, the Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI) recently spearheaded a community cleaning campaign in the Mji Mpya settlement, Mnyamani ward. This collaborative effort, part of the Early Action Plan and the DARAJA (Developing Risk Awareness through Joint Action Daraja Project, was a proactive measure to prepare for the upcoming rainy season and mitigate the risks of flooding.
The campaign saw a remarkable turnout, bringing together the Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI), the Tanzania Federation for the Urban Poor, local leaders, and dedicated community members. Their collective efforts focused on critical actions to safeguard the settlement:
- Clearing Blocked Drainage Channels: Participants worked tirelessly to clear drainage systems, ensuring a clear path for rainwater and preventing potential backups.
- Removing Solid Waste: A significant amount of solid waste was collected and properly disposed of, which often clogs waterways and contributes to flooding.
- Distributing Educational Flyers: Over 100 educational flyers were distributed, raising awareness about the importance of Early Action during extreme weather events

With more than 35 active participants, including women, youth, and local officials, this campaign serves as a powerful testament to the effectiveness of proactive, community-led planning in the face of climate threats. The initiative highlights the core principles of Early Action and the importance of preparing for climate-related challenges before they escalate.
A huge thank you is extended to all partners, including UKaidWISER and Resurgence, for their invaluable support, and to the incredible Mji Mpya community for their dedication and hard work in making this vital initiative a success.

The campaign is a crucial step towards the broader goal of Early Warning For All, ensuring that communities are equipped with the knowledge and resources to respond effectively to climate risks.
