MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia has taken a significant step toward bolstering the nation’s climate resilience by holding a Validation Meeting for the Strategic Plan to establish the Somalia National Meteorological Agency (SNMA).
The meeting, which took place in Mogadishu, brought together a broad range of stakeholders to review and endorse the strategic framework for 2025–2030.

Key stakeholders from various Somali ministries, agencies, and regional administrations gather at the validation meeting for the strategic plan of the Somalia National Meteorological Agency (SNMA).
The event gathered key representatives from federal ministries, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Federal Member States, and the Banadir Regional Administration. This wide-ranging participation was crucial in ensuring that the plan for SNMA is nationally aligned and has cross-sectoral commitment, reflecting a unified approach to addressing the country’s climate challenges.
A major highlight of the meeting was the reaffirmed support from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Represented by Dr. Guled Artan, the WMO emphasized the strategic importance of SNMA in strengthening Somalia’s early warning systems and enhancing national climate resilience.
Dr. Artan’s presence underscored the international community’s recognition of this initiative as a vital component of Somalia’s long-term stability and development.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change expressed its gratitude to all participants for their dedication and collaborative spirit. This validation marks a critical milestone in Somalia’s commitment to institutionalizing climate and weather services, which are essential for effective disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. The establishment of SNMA is seen as a foundational step toward providing reliable weather forecasts and climate information to protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather events like droughts and floods.
