Today, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), under the leadership of Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, convened a crucial Regional Forum for Eminent Personalities and Leaders for Peace in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya.
This high-level event, held in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, represented by Hon. Hannah Cheptumo, Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, brought together a distinguished assembly of respected elders, former heads of state, scholars, and civic leaders who constitute the IGAD Council of Eminent Personalities.
In a region grappling with complex crises, ranging from active conflicts to severe climate shocks, the Council of Eminent Personalities stands as a vital moral compass. These esteemed individuals offer a unique blend of wisdom, impartiality, and trusted leadership, stepping in where formal systems may face limitations.
During the forum, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu delivered a powerful message, emphasizing that “Our legitimacy comes not from power, but from trust”. He articulated a clear vision for the Council’s role: “We must turn the thunder of conflict into the whisper of reconciliation”. This statement underscores IGAD’s commitment to fostering dialogue and healing divisions across the Horn of Africa.
As IGAD approaches its 40th anniversary in 2026, this gathering represents a decisive step towards formally institutionalizing the Council of Eminent Personalities within IGAD’s policy organs and significantly enhancing preventive diplomacy efforts across the region.
This proactive approach aims to save countless lives and resources by preventing conflicts before they escalate.
IGAD extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of Kenya for graciously hosting this milestone event, showcasing their unwavering commitment to meaningful dialogue in the region. Special acknowledgment is also given to development partners, particularly the Government of Japan, for their sustained commitment and crucial support.
