African Union to Host Joint Forum on Climate and Weather Services in Namibia

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA — The African Union Commission (AUC), with support from the European Union, is set to host the Second Continental Joint ClimSA and SEWA Forum from June 23 to June 27, 2025, in Windhoek, Namibia. The forum will be held under the theme, “Accelerating Access to Climate and Weather Services for Resilient African Economies and Communities.”

The primary objective of the forum is to highlight the impact of the ClimSA (Intra-ACP Climate Services and Related Applications) and SEWA (Space for Early Warning in Africa) initiatives. These programs are designed to enhance Africa’s capacity to anticipate, plan, and act on climate-related threats. The event will serve as a platform for policymakers, practitioners, and the public to exchange ideas, share successes, and explore future collaborations to address the continent’s climate challenges.

Addressing Africa’s Climate Vulnerability

Africa is one of the world’s most vulnerable regions to the effects of climate change, with frequent droughts, floods, and pest outbreaks. The continent’s heavy reliance on rainfed agriculture makes its population particularly susceptible to extreme weather events. Despite this, only about 40% of Africa’s population has access to effective early warning systems, underscoring a significant gap in climate service delivery and infrastructure.

The ClimSA and SEWA initiatives are at the forefront of addressing these challenges by:

  • Improving data access and strengthening institutional capacities.
  • Leveraging space-based technologies for early warning systems.
  • Integrating climate services into national policies and engaging the public.

Expected Outcomes and Key Participants

The forum aims to produce several key outcomes, including showcasing the impact of climate services across Africa, promoting knowledge exchange, highlighting the role of space-based technologies, and fostering new partnerships for sustainability and innovation. The event will bring together a diverse group of participants, including representatives from African Union Member States, regional climate centers, meteorological services, policymakers, scientists, journalists, and development partners.

Media representatives are invited to cover the forum, which will feature a high-level opening session with statements from AU officials and dignitaries, as well as opportunities for interviews, photo coverage, and exclusive briefings. The forum promises to provide valuable insights into how these initiatives are influencing policy, decision-making, and climate-friendly actions to build a more resilient future for Africa.
