Mombasa, Kenya – Registration is now open for a specialized workshop focused on “Catalyzing Capacity for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR),” set to take place in Mombasa on October 4, 2025.

The one-day event is designed to bring together a select group of 40 participants to explore the scientific, policy, and economic pathways for scaling up ocean-based climate solutions in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) and across Africa.

Co-hosted by the Ocean Climate Innovation Hubs (Kenya & Tanzania), Ocean Visions, [C]Worthy, and Kinjani, the workshop will run from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is a post-symposium event following the larger WIOMSA Scientific Symposium, offering a targeted training and networking opportunity for experts.

The workshop’s core focus is to deepen the collective understanding of marine carbon removal, a process that involves removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere using the ocean’s natural chemical and biological processes. These methods are increasingly seen as a vital complement to emissions reduction efforts in the global fight against climate change. The event will specifically address the unique challenges and opportunities for these solutions in tropical waters.

Organizers are calling on scientists, policymakers, innovators, and community leaders to apply. The limited space ensures an intimate and highly interactive environment for participants to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

Interested individuals must register their interest by the September 1, 2025 deadline. Selected attendees will be notified directly via email.
