In a move to protect vulnerable communities from an impending drought, the World Food Programme (WFP) has initiated a series of “Anticipatory Actions” in Ethiopia’s Somali and Oromia regions. The measures, triggered by a recent alert from the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI), aim to safeguard lives and livelihoods ahead of the forecasted March-May 2025 dry season.

While a December 2024 forecast initially suggested that the regions might not meet the criteria for a moderate drought, subsequent forecasts in January and February showed a significant number of rain-dependent areas were at high risk, prompting WFP to act
