NEW YORK, USA — The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has arrived in New York to participate in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). According to a press release from IGAD, the Executive Secretary’s mission is focused on strengthening cooperation for peace, stability, and resilience in the Horn of Africa.
Shared on X, Dr. Gebeyehu is leading a high-level delegation, including IGAD Directors in Peace & Security, Health & Social Development, and Planning & Partnerships. The delegation will engage with Member States, development partners, and international institutions to advance the region’s priorities.
A central part of his mission is to elevate the voices of youth and women in peacebuilding and climate action. Dr. Gebeyehu is also driving dialogue on the conflict in Sudan, mobilizing urgent international action for a lasting solution. He is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings to garner support for women-led peace initiatives and youth-driven climate innovation.
In a statement, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu emphasized the dual urgency of his visit. “Sudan demands urgent action for peace and stability,” he said, adding that “the voices of youth and women must be empowered to drive climate resilience and inclusive growth across our region.”
In parallel to these high-level discussions, the IGAD delegation will also press for urgent humanitarian and political responses to the crisis in Sudan, while also addressing pressing regional challenges such as climate change, displacement, and insecurity. The presence of the IGAD leadership at UNGA80 aims to reinforce the regional body’s commitment to creating a more peaceful and prosperous future for the Horn of Africa.
