NAIROBI—The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is set to host its Youth Peace and Security Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, on August 13-14, 2025. The conference will bring together young peacebuilders from across the IGAD region to address the challenges and opportunities facing a population where over 60% are under the age of 30.
The event aims to amplify the voices of young people, particularly those affected by conflict and displacement. In countries like Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, young people, including refugees and those in cross-border communities, are already active, yet often unrecognized, agents of peace and resilience. They serve as local organizers, educators, and advocates, mediating conflicts and promoting social cohesion in fragile settings.
The conference will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative action. Participants will work to identify and address systemic barriers to youth participation, such as unemployment and digital exclusion. They will also share innovative, youth-led peacebuilding approaches, including the use of digital platforms and creative arts, that have gained traction in countries like Kenya and Uganda.
By the end of the two-day event, organizers hope to strengthen regional networks of youth peacebuilders and co-develop policy recommendations to promote inclusive governance and institutionalize youth participation in peace and security frameworks. The conference’s expected outcomes include increased visibility and support for youth-led peace initiatives and a stronger alignment between the IGAD Youth Policy and national strategies.
The entire event will be streamed live on the IGAD social media platforms, making it accessible to a wider audience and encouraging broader engagement. Further information and event updates can be found on the official website: https://igad.int/igadyouthconference/.
