NAIROBI—The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is set to launch the IGAD Regional Focus of the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in Nairobi, according to IGAD.

The launch event is scheduled to take place from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM EAT. According to the data provided, the report offers a comprehensive assessment of acute food insecurity and malnutrition in the IGAD region in 2024-2025. It includes major food crises, identifies populations of highest concern, and analyzes trends over time.

According to IGAD, the report also examines the main drivers of these food crises and presents the most recent available data and information on displacement and nutrition in the region.

The 2025 report, according to IGAD, will examine the primary drivers behind these crises. The 2024 report highlighted that conflict and extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, are major contributors to the region’s food insecurity. The ongoing conflict in Sudan, for example, has devastated livelihoods and triggered a massive humanitarian disaster.

Displacement also plays a significant role. According to IGAD, the number of forcibly displaced people in the region reached a record high by mid-2024, with 25 million people displaced, including 20 million internally displaced people (IDPs) and 5 million refugees and asylum seekers. The new report is expected to provide updated data on these critical issues.
