NAIROBI, June 29 (NECJOGHA) – Rainfall is expected across much of Kenya in the coming week, with cool and cloudy conditions forecast in several regions, the Kenya Meteorological Department said on Monday.

The weekly forecast, valid from June 30 to July 6, indicates showers over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley itself, and the Coast. “Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Rift Valley and Northeastern Kenya,” the department said in its bulletin signed by Acting Director Edward M. Muriuki.

Daytime temperatures above 30°C are expected in parts of the Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya, while night-time lows could dip below 10°C in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, occasional morning rains and afternoon thunderstorms are likely, while Nairobi and surrounding counties may see cloudy mornings followed by sunny intervals and scattered showers later in the day. Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale could experience morning and afternoon showers in some areas.

The department noted that most parts of the country were dry in the previous week, with Trans Nzoia recording the highest seven-day rainfall total of 46.8 mm. Mandera registered the highest daily maximum temperature at 36.4°C, while Nyahururu recorded the lowest minimum at 5.0°C.

“This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) and five-day forecasts issued by this Department. County specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorological Services,” the bulletin said.
