The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced the 3rd “Weather and Society” Conference, to be held online from 23–26 February 2026. Organised under the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and its Societal and Economic Research Applications (SERA) working group, with support from Lobelia.Earth, the event will focus on building weather‑ready communities through whole‑of‑society approaches.

Extreme hydrometeorological events — from floods and storms to prolonged droughts — are affecting societies, economies, and the environment at levels unprecedented in human history. Governments, scientists, and decision‑makers face mounting challenges in managing risks and protecting citizens.

The conference will bring together leading researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to explore the critical intersection of meteorological science and societal applications. Organisers say discussions will highlight how science can better inform policy, strengthen resilience, and support communities in adapting to increasingly volatile weather patterns.

Delegates will examine advances in forecasting, risk communication, and community engagement, with sessions designed to bridge the gap between technical expertise and practical decision‑making. The WMO describes the event as a “key forum” for integrating science with societal needs at a time when climate extremes are reshaping global priorities.
