ILAMU, Ethiopia, May 13 (NECJOGHA News Desk ) — A synchronized cross‑border vaccination programme targeting priority transboundary animal diseases has been launched along the Ethiopia–Kenya border, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD) said on Monday.

The campaign began in Ilamu and Boku Luboma Kebeles in Miyo District, Borana Zone, Ethiopia, and aims to vaccinate 300,000 livestock in its initial phase. The extended exercise is projected to reach a total of 5 million animals  including camels, cattle, goats and sheep  across districts bordering Kenya, such as Miyo, Moyale, Dhire, Dillo and Teltele, by the end of June 2026.

The programme focuses on combating priority transboundary animal diseases (TADs), including Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), which threaten pastoral livelihoods and regional trade. ICPALD said the synchronized approach is designed to ensure effective coverage across borders, reducing the risk of outbreaks and strengthening resilience in pastoral communities.

The launch is funded by the African Development Bank under the Building Resilience to Food and Nutrition Security (BREFONS) project, which supports regional efforts to safeguard food systems and improve animal health.
