KHARTOUM, May 14 (NECJOGHA News Desk) – Sudan is facing a deepening food and nutrition crisis as conflict enters its fourth year, with nearly 19.5 million people experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity. The latest analysis from the IPC Global Initiative shows that 41 percent of the population assessed is in IPC Phase 3 or above, meaning crisis or worse, including 135,000 people already in IPC Phase 5, classified as catastrophe.

The situation is described as fragile and volatile, with 14 areas across Central Darfur and Greater Kordofan identified as being at risk of famine. In North Darfur, at least two localities are expected to remain at extremely critical levels of acute malnutrition, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Analysts warn that ongoing fighting is likely to intensify in Greater Kordofan and North Darfur, further worsening humanitarian conditions.

Conflict, economic decline, displacement, and challenges in water, sanitation, and nutrition are driving the crisis. The IPC report stresses that without immediate intervention, the risk of famine will grow, particularly in areas already experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Humanitarian experts are calling for urgent action to halt hostilities and protect civilians, while also ensuring humanitarian access to affected populations. They emphasize the need to increase assistance, scale up treatment and nutrition interventions, and strengthen data collection to better inform response efforts.

“This crisis is entering a dangerous phase, with millions at risk of worsening hunger and malnutrition,” humanitarian agencies said, warning that the window to prevent famine is rapidly closing.
