Kampala, Uganda – November 2025 – The international campaign #DiscoverGroundwater has released the second installment of its global awareness series, shining a spotlight on the History of Groundwater. Following the widely shared first article on The Beauty of Groundwater, the new piece traces how groundwater has shaped civilizations, sustained communities, and influenced ecosystems across centuries.
The series, coordinated by the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC), aims to highlight the hidden yet vital role of groundwater in human life and environmental sustainability.
Part 1, The Beauty of Groundwater, celebrated the aesthetic and natural wonders of this unseen resource. Part 2, The History of Groundwater, now available online, provides a deeper look into how societies across the world have relied on wells, springs, and aquifers for survival and development.
Call for Global Contributions
Organizers are now inviting the public to contribute to Part 3: Groundwater Use Around the World, which will showcase the diverse ways groundwater supports life, livelihoods, and industries.
Contributors are encouraged to submit photographs illustrating:
- Drinking and Living – wells, springs, ponds
- Ecosystems – rivers, peatlands, vegetation sustained by groundwater
- Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries
- Energy – geothermal power, cooling for nuclear plants or data centres
- Industry and Mining
Photos can be sent to info@un-igrac.org before 1 December 2025.
A Shared Global Resource
Groundwater remains one of the most critical yet underappreciated resources, providing drinking water for billions and supporting food production, energy generation, and ecosystems worldwide. The #DiscoverGroundwater series seeks to raise awareness and encourage stewardship of this precious resource.
With Part 3 on the horizon, the campaign is calling on communities, researchers, and citizens to help tell the story of groundwater use across cultures and continents.
