NEW YORK – On September 26, global media leaders will convene at the SDG Media Zone to explore a transformative approach to journalism: focusing not only on the world’s problems, but also on the innovative and effective responses that are making a difference.

Moderated by Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, the panel discussion, titled “Solutions Journalism: Telling the Whole Story,” will bring together a diverse group of journalists and media professionals. The conversation aims to highlight how this form of reporting can provide a more accurate and complete picture of the world, rebuild trust in news, and spur action on pressing global challenges.

Among the distinguished speakers is Caroline Sugg, Director of Strategy & Policy at BBC Media Action. Sugg will be joined by:

  • Catherine Cheney, Senior Editor for Special Coverage, Devex
  • David M. Ewalt, Editor-in-Chief, Scientific American
  • Kyota Tanaka, NY/UN Correspondent, The Asahi Shimbun
  • Sandra Coutinho, US Foreign Correspondent, Globo TV
  • Kayode Akintemi, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Nigeria News Central
  • Mark Hertsgaard, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Covering Climate Now
  • David Bornstein, Co-Founder & CEO, Solutions Journalism Network

The panel will delve into how various sectors are using solutions journalism to foster informed dialogue, strengthen accountability, and uncover insights that can guide responses to global challenges and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Solutions journalism moves beyond simply reporting on what’s wrong. By highlighting successful responses to social problems—and the evidence of their effectiveness—it provides a nuanced and empowering narrative. This approach helps audiences understand how change is possible and what strategies have proven successful in real-world contexts.

At BBC Media Action, this methodology is central to their work. The organization combines solutions-focused storytelling with rigorous, in-depth research to show what’s working, what’s not, and how media can be a powerful force for inclusive change.

The event is set to be a key moment in the ongoing conversation about the future of journalism and its role in creating a more sustainable and equitable world. The session will be live-streamed, offering a global audience the opportunity to tune in and learn how a new kind of storytelling is reshaping our understanding of progress.
