The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has launched a call for abstracts for its 8th Symposium on Data Assimilation, to be held in Nanjing, China, from 31 August to 4 September 2026. The event, jointly organised with the 12th International Symposium on Data Assimilation, is expected to draw leading scientists, operational experts, and innovators from across the globe.

Data assimilation — the science of integrating real-world observations with model simulations has long been central to numerical weather prediction. In recent years, it has rapidly expanded into a unifying methodology spanning disciplines from geoscience and paleoclimate reconstruction to biology and engineering. Advances in machine learning, computation, and observation technologies are now reshaping the field, offering new ways to refine predictive models and strengthen decision-making.

Organisers say the symposium will showcase emerging methods, highlight the integration of machine learning with physical science, and explore how data assimilation can enhance system performance through real-time observation and control theory. Researchers are invited to submit abstracts by 28 February 2026.

The WMO describes the gathering as a “critical forum” for advancing next-generation prediction and fostering international collaboration at a time when accurate forecasting is increasingly vital for climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
