Mongabay has unveiled the Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship, a paid six-month program aimed at strengthening the voices of early-career environmental journalists from tropical countries.

The fellowship, running from 2026 to 2028, will support at least 16 English-language fellows each year, offering them a platform to sharpen their reporting skills, build credibility, and expand their global reach.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Financial support: $500 per month (USD)
  • Editorial mentorship: Guidance from Mongabay’s experienced editors
  • Publishing opportunities: Six stories published on Mongabay’s global platform

Application Timeline

  • Deadline: December 15 – February 1
  • Rolling review: Applications will be assessed as they are received

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be from a low- to upper-middle-income tropical country, as classified by the World Bank. “High-income” tropical countries, such as Singapore and Australia, are excluded from the fellowship. A list of eligible countries can be found here.
  • Applicants must be aspiring, early-career environmental journalists.
  • Applicants must be able to work remotely and commit to 10 hours per week.
  • There is no education requirement to apply for the program. The fellowship is not linked to any university.
  • All application materials for the English-language program must be submitted in English.

The initiative underscores Mongabay’s commitment to amplifying diverse perspectives in environmental journalism, particularly from regions most affected by climate change and biodiversity loss.
